2013 Cobb Island Summer Kick Off Party The Cobb Island Summer Kick Off has always been a party, and it proved it again this year. This year 10 WYA boats with 21 people aboard attended, a full 25% of the total attending. There were four contests during the weekend. We entered three and won all three. Mike and Vicky Enos won 1st place for best dressed Hippy. Gary and Nancy Vineyard won 1st place for best dressed boat and Mike and Vicky Enos won 2nd place. In the 60's music trivia contest our WYA team of Gary and Nancy, Mike and Vicky, and Marty and Lamar won 1st place while our second team of Cary Bolin, Tom and Kathy Carroll, Diane Burton and Peggy Saylor, Polly Parks, and Shannon Ritter came in 2nd. We have a competitive bunch. The activities were plentiful and sometime for everyone. Friday nights dinner was a seafood buffet at Capt Johns. The Saturday evening dinner and dance was another delight held at the Rival Restaurant on the island. And we gathered there again for the Sunday morning hangover brunch. There was a great walk around the island to collect the various beads, which has become a staple of the weekend event. So we thank Peggy Saylor for guiding all us boaters up to and thru the event.

This year was no different. Everyone was given a starter bead set and then clues to find beads placed around the island. See a small set of them at right. Note the WYA burgee on one of the beads ... Peggy Saylor, our leader for this event, worked to get our own bead made (one of only 2 clubs who took the Kick Off challenge to make a bead). Shannon Ritter cut the small pieces of wood and several others painted and pasted the burgee on one side and a peace symbol on the other. Had to have a peace symbol as this was a 60"s event theme. With beads in place we arrived Friday the 14th and started Captain's Hour. |
|||
The Captain's Hour was held at the Rival Restaurant. We got reacquainted with old friends from last year's boating season and had a drink or two.
We continued the socialization and then returned to our boats at the various marinas in Cobb Island.
Here is a picture of the new docks at Capt John's Marina. Five of our boats moored there and were treated very well by the marina. At far right is Kathy Carroll who along with husband Tom, drove down for Saturday's festivities. She brought along one of her signature drinks, this one a fresh Mango Margarita; the perfect addition to the party as she fed more than a dozen on the back deck of Apolonia.
At left you see Ralph enjoying a group of ladies on Apolonia. At right is the Cobb Island YC Commodore giving Mike and Vicky Enos their first place prize for being the best dressed Hippy couple. Is that really you Mike?
Nancy holds up her first place prize for Best Dressed Boat and at far right you see her reaction when she learned she had won.
And here is a picture of the gang that won first place in the 60's music trivia and a large crowd gathered on a local yard to learn about eating mushrooms and to watch the USCG demonstrate the proper method to get a man overboard back in your boat.
Ralph and Kris take a rest stop during the day as do Cary, Kathy, Polly, Peggy, and Diane.
Later we gathered at the Rivah restaurant for dinner and dancing. Phil and Patti Rogers, with part of their family, watch the crowd and Gary and Peggy Saylor share a good laugh
And during the dinner dance Ruth pushed hard to sell 50-50 tickets.
Some lucky sole won over $500 that he turned back to the YC to be donated to
a local food bank. Nice guy.

Here are some more pictures taken by Tom Carroll. A group relaxing on the yard and Vicky being entertained by the antics of her husband on the pier. |

Another group relaxing on the yard and at far right on our other Hippy, Bob Blunt. |

Gary and Nancy getting their wigs ready for the afternoon and at far right our boats from a distance.
And we end with two pictures of the man overboard rescue instruction provided by the USCG and the Sherrifs Office.
