2012 June Cobb Island SKO ... Best boat trip yet! A great time at Cobb Island with members and guests from 8 WYA boats collecting beads, eating, dancing, seeing old friends and making new ones. Cobb Island Yacht Club proved themselves as the "hosts with the most" with finely orchestrated activities and accommodations for all attending. With a Mardi Gras theme for this year's event, the weekend featured the now-traditional walking tour scavenger hunt throughout the Island in search of the coveted necklace beads...many handmade by CIYC's beadmaster. Our own Diane Burton won the contest by collecting 82 beads this year and wearing her collection from previous years. Diane's success was matched by two other WYA awards at the weekend. See below and on our new "WALL of FAME" page.
Several PRYCA Yacht Clubs merrily arrived for the annual PRYCA Summer Kick Off Event. Over 40 boats tied up and numerous attendees traveled by car. At right you see the Friday night happy hour, launching the weekend festivities, just as George and Polly bring Constant II into the marina.
WYA boats were berthed at Scuttlebutt's, just over the bridge from the mainland, making for an easy stroll over to Captain John's Restaurant for dinner on Friday. Gary and Nancy needed their hard shell crab fix for the week. Mike regaled us with his plans for the planned karaoke competition. "Tequila" anyone? Being of fairly sound minds, we skipped the karaoke.
Instead, most of our 18 members adjourned to George and Polly's salon
for evening cocktails and the telling of tall stories. These days,
Panama is a favorite topic. BTW...George previously was a member of
the Panama Canal Commission! You never know.....
Next morning George, Gary, and Mike led the way to the coffee shop where the Cobb Island group explained the days activities, including the bead hunt, safety demos, wine tasting, crab recipe contest, boat decorating contest, and local live entertainment. Something for everyone to do! |
|||
At right a group of us walking the Cobb Island streets looking for buckets of beads. Pleasant weather and great neighborhoods to stroll through. And there was plenty of time for relaxing on the back of the boats visiting friends ... even the 4 legged ones. Sandy Doucette, a favorite buddy from Aquia Harbor Yacht Club, brought along Abby to meet Josie.
Wandering the town we found Kris and Ruth enjoying a leisurely lunch at Scuttlebutt Cafe and Gary and Nancy relaxing on Apolonia after their bead hunting trek.
Mid afternoon Saturday found most of us at the wine tasting. Of course! Lively tunes by the duo Calico Jack, singing songs they wrote about the watermen's life around southern Maryland. Really, really fine music with an Irish lilt.
Gary was not particularly impressed with the wines we sampled, but he bravely downed every drop, as, it appears, did Jean. Norma, on the other hand, looks like she was falling woefully behind in the imbibing department.
Bob and Norma smiling for the camera! Mike and Vicki were happy to pose as well a bit later .... festooned in their Mardi Gras regalia, standing at the ready on the back of Patriot. They were more than ready for the Cajun buffet and a night of dancing.
Nancy Vineyard dazzled the crowd as she moved through the room and you can see that Kris, Mike, and Ralph were ready to rock and roll.
Peggy and Polly sipped cocktails moments prior to going after that Cajun food spread out on the buffet. At far right are some of the crowd from other clubs.
Ruth started selling 50/50 tickets in early afternoon and continued coercing
potential buyers throughout the evening. We all watched our numbers
carefully and Ruth and her selling buddy, Barbara Thayer of Cobb Island
Yacht Club, sold over $1,100 in tickets making the lucky winner's wallet
fatter by well over $500. The sponsor's share goes to supporting a
local food bank.
No WYA member won the 50/50 but we had three wins in the evening. Mike and Vicky Enos won 3rd place in the best dressed boat contest. They are holding the medal up at right. |
|||
And in a hilarious event ... a man's wet T-Shirt contest ... our own Bob Blunt put on a show that won the top award. But, as you see at near right, it was a tough competition.
The main event ... bead hunting ... was won by our own IPC Diane Burton.
She collected 82 beads that day, one more than the next competitor.
She also decided to wear her beads from the last few year's events that was
mentioned in the award announcement.. Congratulations Diane.
Bob led WYA's talented dancing troupe onto the dance floor, while Commodore Phil encouraged - and perhaps bullied - innocent seated patrons to get on up and boogie. |
|||
I'm not sure what these three men were doing but they sure enjoyed
themselves with their chairs on the dance floor. We think this might
be an entry in the upcoming Float In talent competition. Wonder what
talent that takes?!?
The next morning our hosts put on a breakfast buffet and omelet bar, after making complementary deliveries of Sunday's Washington Post. Wonderful hosts. |

Sadly, the party's over and boats begin to take leave. Ruth and Jean headed to White Point Marina for some engine work and Gary and Nancy generously offered to pick them up with their Chris Craft, Summer "C." Gary needed some more time on the water and it was perfect boating weather. Here they are at right on their return trip up the river to Colonial Beach. They flew past us at about 30 knots while we poked at 9 knots. Regardless of your speed or destination, it's enough to just be out on the water.
