Bob and Norma on Norma Joan |
Bob sent us this note on the End of Summer Party ... I will start this tale of woe with…It was a beautiful day on the Potomac River. The Norma Joan was less than an hour out when the port engine went down due to an air leak in the fuel system. I asked the first mate what she wanted to do and was surprised to have her say, “Let’s keep going!” So on one engine we limped up river only to meet a weather front head on at three knots and little control. Our tiny ship was tossed and tossed!! After six hours we made our way into Aquia Harbor Marina. It was our first trip up Aquia Creek, but found the voyage very easy, even at low tide. The members of Aquia Yacht Club and the PRYCA, along with Ralph Mason, were at the dock to meet us. They even escorted us in and helped us tie up. It was a wonderful weekend! Dinner Saturday night was great, with a really good band and dancing. I must say Westmoreland stood out on the dance floor… you can all be proud! Sunday, Mike Crouch and his friend Jim, along with the dock master and the captain worked on the Norma Joan and were able to make repairs for the ride home on Monday. The girls took a walking tour of Government Island while the men worked on the Norma Joan. Sunday started with Bloody Mary’s and a continental breakfast, followed by the Taste of Stafford, which was a very filling event. Only to get back to the club house and have to eat chili and cornbread. Poor us! Norma and I, along with forty friends, watched football and had fellowship. Sunday night Sandy Doucette was nice enough to take Norma in for the night, as the captain and his mates had made a mess of the boat in their effort to make repairs and she smelled a bit foul. Sandy also invited a gang aboard for an after party that left her lovely boat a mess, but this was taken in stride as was the weekend with off and on weather. I want to say, as PRYCA events go, this was one of the best! Norma and I are glad we went. Monday started with fresh baked muffins, newspapers and lots of laughter over the weekend’s activities. I am sorry to say I can’t report on the games or other events as we were late to the party. Our trip home was much faster and uneventful as all boating should be. We are blessed to have so many great people in our clubs and along our river that make us feel so welcome.
