2012 May Tall Timbers ... ten boats and 26 WYA members and guests joined Rick's Tall Timbers Crew for the Memorial Day festivities. Just a fantastic time with gorgeous weather. Friday night dinner, Saturday lunch, music and dinner. Sunday afternoon buffet with the 25th hour band followed by the boat burning. It just can't get any better.
Phil and Carey arrived Friday and marked a spot. The rest of the group started gathering Saturday morning. Bill brought in Cherish with a crew of 5, while Gary Vineyard stood by to help them tie up on the face dock. Carey joined the WYA banner on Cherish's port side once it was tied up or someone has lashed her to the piling. Hard to tell.
All relaxed Saturday afternoon under the shade trees enjoying frozen libations. Predicted thunderstorms did not arrive, but refreshing breezes did. Life's tough when you're a boater!
Then the party started on the piers. By mid-afternoon,
we had 8 boats tied up for the weekend. Two other WYA boats came in
with members over the weekend. Bob and Norma Blunt had a
full weekend at the Lighthouse but scooted down-river on their go fast boat to visit for the day Saturday.
Delighted to see them. Throughout the weekend, MJ served up her now-famous array of appetizers, supplemented by Vicki, Carey and many others with a great spread by Kathy Carroll on Sunday. MJ's presentations are launching a serious challenge to Martha! |
|||
Nina and Jennifer not only joined us for the weekend, but
have rejoined our auspicious club. Welcome back! And, we met
some new friends.
While it might appear that we were lined up waiting for the ferry, in truth we were waiting for the next round. Notice reasonable adults broiling in the sun. |
|||
Saturday evening we descended upon the Marina restaurant, The Reluctant Navigator. We shared food and swapped tales, while Alex regaled the ladies with amazing nuggets of wisdom. Now, were the ladies smiling or chuckling?
Jennifer is elated to be back!
On the far right something is amiss. Several glasses with lemon garnishes look suspiciously like water and tea. And, what's with the cup of coffee?!? Must be members in training. |
|||
At right you see Chris and MJ's sailboat, decorated for the
occasion. Banners compliments of Alex and Maureen.
At far right you see Tom and Kathy Carroll's boat pulling into a covered slip on Sunday. |
|||
Kathy Carroll is the declared and soon to be decorated "master" of the Margarita
and she brought a brimming pitcher full for the group, as well as appetizers
and their friends, Tim and Pat.. Wonderful additions to the group.
Kathy also makes mean sangrias and mojotis. We love talent!
Nina and Tischka (sp?) chilling on the boat. |
|||
Back again on Sunday for the BBQ buffet. Southern Maryland cooking is worth the trip. Some hardy souls danced later to the 25th hour band and some more idle relaxed until the evening on the beach.
Now here's what makes the weekend! Sunday evening wooden boat burning
on the beach.
Grabbing chairs and blankets, we headed on down to the Potomac's edge, where
we were joined by over 200 people to watch a derelict boat go up in flames.
No other fireworks...those will be on Labor Day weekend and are always
spectacular. Later that evening, rumor has it that several of our ladies solved the world's problems. We just need to check to see if they remember any solutions they came up with. |
|||
Come Monday morning, we all got an early start home due to
impending small craft warnings for the afternoon. Once again the weatherman
erred. No thunderstorms or rough water. Just a pleasant ride
back to home port.
Our thanks to Tall Timbers. We love it for its character and characters! Anyone missing a Tall Timbers event ... really misses out.
Great, great time!
