Flag Raising & 2014 Derby de Mayo Party 3 May 2014 Spring finally allowed us a reprieve and we had a beautiful day for the Flag Raising and Derby de Mayo Party. Mary Jane Smith was the Float Captain for setting up and decorating, with abundant help from her husband Chris, Carey Bolin and Katherine Smith. Amazing! Our Commodore started it off with the Flag Raising, introducing all the past commodores, raising the Flag and starting the boating schedule for the year. Gary Vineyard fired the cannon at the appointed time and all was well. Our Vice Commodore Bill Bukevicz Blessed the Fleet and wished us all well. With ~50 people in attendance we then headed toward the party side of Bayside Marina where we held the event. Abundant food and drink were available as we sailed through the afternoon, culminating with Mint Juleps, prepared by Patty as we partied some more and watched the running of the Kentucky Derby. Les and Hope won the 50/50 and Derby pool. Pictures below show we had a fantastic day. |

Newest members Brad and Clare receive their WYA burgee from Commodore Bob as the trusty cannon, used at flag raising, rested in the grass.
Fajitas were cooked by our able trio of chefs, although I'm told Mike just did the supervising. While the cooking was doing, Gail and Bob had a friendly conversation with Relda Shick, the wife of our guest speaker for the day Kyle.
And let the fun begin ... Janet and Peggy were laughing and Norma visited with their guest for the day.
Under the canopies Jack, Erin, Diane, Patty and Ann enjoyed friendship and food.
And some more ... Maureen, Alex, Hope, Les and another group also enjoying the day.
Here we have Lori, Bill and Vicky and guarding the passageway to the merriment Chris Smith a trooper who worked tirelessly under the supervision of his wife Mary Jane. Chris and I have some stories to tell about how our wives keep us in line and doing right. Don't we love it Chris? We really do.
Chris and George and a host of people sitting outside enjoying the afternoon.
And there are more .... | ||||
Donna is smiling and Chris and Katherine are having a discussion with our guest speaker Kyle Shick.
And we really spread out on the pier to enjoy the late afternoon sun. Phil Rogers and Carey were relaxing and enjoying the food. |

We had several guests at the party and here are a few pictures of those guests. Glad you stopped by.
Afternoon food finished and it is time to get ready for the Kentucky Derby. Here is Patty preparing Mint Juleps and the winners of the Derby contest. First place went to Mariah, grand daughter of Gail and Bob. Second Place to our newest member Clare. Third place to Nancy. A great time was had by all.
You see the top of Janet's hat and Lori parading to be judged.
Here is our Derby Hat Contest Winner Mariah and Bill and Donna the only couple entrance into the contest.
Now how about this hat ... it is the top of our third place winner Nancy along with one of the male entrees, Bob Mayer.
And we are settling down now an see some of the crowd at the tables in the Captain's Lounge at Bayside and a view of the sunset the perfect ending to a fantastic party.
