Potomac River Festival Weekend 6-8 June 2014 This new event for the Club was the idea of Mike and Vicky Enos, our June Float Captains. We had a great weekend that included putting an antique boat in the Saturday land parade, putting 6 boats in the in water boat parade Sunday, and having a great gathering for drinks and hot dogs at Boat House Marina after the event. Below you'll see some of the pictures. We thank Mike and Vicky for setting it up, Vicky and Nancy for planning the decorations, Bill Bowman for supplying the boat and pick-up to pull it, the 40 participants, everyone who brought food for the cookout, and whoever provided the perfect weather. No pictures, as we were too busy with vittles and drink. Thanks to Brad for cooking and all for bringing side dishes. And, of course, we can't fail to say thanks to the Rear Commodore for setting up the cook-out... and driving us to sign up for the boat parade.
For the in-water boat parade there were 13 awards, with 4 for special circumstances. Of the remaining nine awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for the 3 boat categories, WYA won 5 of them -- a clear majority. In the mid category, Bob and Gail Mayer in Gail Winds won first place and Mike and Vicky in Patriot won 2nd Place. For the yacht category, we swept the awards; 1st place to Bob and Norma in Norma Joan, 2nd place to Phil and Carey in Apolonia, and 3rd place to Shannon and Sue in SS Ritter. Can't get much better than that so we'll put all these winners on our Wall of Fame. Many thanks from these boaters to their riders who helped decorate -- and provide much needed refreshments! |

Saturday morning started with all of us working to the direction of Vicky and Nancy to get the decorations on the antique boat that Shannon pulled for us in the parade. |

Vicky digging in her decorations bag and the final look of our antique boat.
But it could not be complete until you put two golf carts behind the boat, one carrying our very special Elvis on velvet. We trusted Elvis to the cart driven by Brad and Claire.
Our boat crew................
The Colonial Beach Girl Scout Troop 3212 and the Bolivian dance group Tinkus Wapurys Tiataco VA USA.
Gary and Bob maintained control on the boat during the parade, while Carey -- who organized the parade -- conferred with Rhonda, the Festival chairman..
Two of the always-entertaining Bolivian dance troupes from the DC area whose mission it is to preserve the traditions and culture of the Andean Valley in their new American communities. They are simply amazing.
Now we switch from the carnival on the grounds to the Sunday boat parade. At right you see some of the guests on Apolonia as we got underway.
Pat's enjoying the ride and, at right, you see Norma Joan, the 1st Place winner of the Yacht Category ... thanks to the efforts of our Commodore Bob and Secretary Norma.
Here's Apolonia, the 2nd place winner and SS Ritter the 3rd place winner. SS Ritter would surely have won 2nd place except the guests on Apolonia talked the Captain into doing a 360 turn at the town pier which gave it a unique edge in the competition.
Bob and Gail Mayer on Gail Winds, the first place winner in the mid size category.
Patriot's decorations are mostly on the stern which we did not get a picture of, but they looked great. And, catch a look of Puff the Magic Dragon!.
Here's Butch, the work boat at Boat House Marina, taking the Sea Scouts out for the parade followed by a shot of workers and supervisor (yes, that's you, Ralph - with drink in hand) decorating Apolonia.
Here's the crowd on Diane and Peggy's boat having a good old time. Most of the WYA boats had a large crowd aboard. |
